Why is water pouring over the sides of my gutters when it rains?

Water pours over the sides of a gutter because it can't travel to the downspout and out fast enough. The usual causes are debris clogging the channel or the downspout, a gutter that has sagged or pulled out of level, or a downpour heavier than the gutter can carry.

The thing that changes the answer is where the overflow happens. If water spills along the whole length, the gutter is probably full of debris. If it spills in one spot, look for a sag, a bad joint or a blocked downspout at that point.

Why it happens

Leaves, shingle grit, twigs and dirt settle in the channel and form a dam. Rain then backs up behind it and spills over the front edge. A blocked downspout does the same thing from the other end, because the water has nowhere to go.

Gutters also need a slight slope toward the downspout. Over time hangers loosen, the gutter sags, and water pools in the low spots instead of draining. A pool of standing water adds weight, which pulls the gutter down further. Leaking joints and open seams cause drips and streaks even when the channel is clear.

Where you live matters too. Palm debris and seed pods and heavy summer downpours overload gutters in the South. Autumn leaves and ice are the usual trouble in the North. Either way, a gutter that was fine in a light shower can overflow in a hard rain once it has some debris in it.

What you can check yourself

  • Watch it during rain

From the ground or a covered doorway, see where the water spills. Overflow along the full run points to debris, while one spot points to a sag, a clog or a bad joint.

  • Look at the downspout outlet

Check whether water is coming out of the bottom of the downspout. A weak trickle or none at all means the downspout is blocked.

  • Look for sagging and gaps

Stand back and sight along the gutter for dips, or for spots where it has pulled away from the fascia board. Check the joints for drips or staining.

  • Clear loose debris from a ladder

On firm, level ground, with the ladder well away from overhead power lines, scoop out soft debris by hand into a bucket. Don't climb onto the roof. That is not handyman work.

  • Check where the water lands

Make sure the downspout discharges away from the wall. Water pooling at the foundation means the downspout needs an extension.

When to call a pro

Call a pro if the gutters are high, if a ladder would have to go near power lines, or if the gutter sags or leaks after you clear it. Soft or rotten fascia is another reason. Hangers can't hold in rotten wood, so the board has to be assessed before the gutter is re-fixed.

What the technician will do

  • Clear the gutters by handThe technician works from a ladder, removes the debris from the channel and bags it so it isn't left on your lawn or driveway.
  • Flush the downspoutsWater is run through each downspout to confirm it flows freely and to clear any blockage lower down.
  • Re-fix loose hangersSagging sections are lifted back to a proper slope and secured so water runs to the downspout instead of pooling.
  • Reseal leaking jointsOpen seams and joints are cleaned and resealed so water stays in the gutter.
  • Add downspout extensionsExtensions carry water away from the walls so it doesn't collect at the base of the house.

Related questions

How often should gutters be cleaned?
It depends on the trees around the house and the season. Houses under heavy leaf or palm cover need cleaning more often than those in the open. Check after the main leaf-drop and after big storms.
What affects the cost of gutter cleaning?
The main factors are the length of the gutter run, the height of the house and how easily a ladder can be set up. The amount of debris and any repairs needed also matter. The estimate is free, and the handyman confirms the price before starting.
Can clean gutters still overflow?
Yes. If the gutter has sagged, the water won't reach the downspout. A very heavy downpour can also outrun the downspout's capacity. In both cases a technician can check the slope and the outlets.
Why does water run down behind the gutter?
Water gets behind the gutter when it overflows or when the gutter has pulled away from the fascia. Left alone, it can stain or soften the board. A handyman can look at the fascia and re-fix the gutter if the wood is sound.
