Furniture assembly, done right
Flat-pack furniture goes together faster and sturdier with the right tools and someone who has built it before, and tall pieces should be anchored to the wall when they are done.

What people call about
- Bed frames, dressers, nightstands and wardrobes.
- Desks, office chairs, bookcases and shelving units.
- Cribs, bunk beds and children's furniture.
- Patio sets, grills, sheds-in-a-box and playsets.
- Furniture to take apart for a move and rebuild at the new place.
Before the handyman arrives
- Keep the hardware bags sealed until the handyman arrives. Most "missing" parts are a mixed-up bag.
- Do not leave a tall dresser or bookcase standing unanchored where children are around. Anti-tip straps are cheap and are fitted as part of the job.
- Have the boxes in the room the furniture is going in, if you can, so it does not have to be carried built.
What the handyman does
- Every part checked against the instructions before building, so a missing piece is found early.
- Assembled square and tight, with the right tool for each fixing rather than over-tightened.
- Dressers, bookcases and TVs anchored to the wall with anti-tip kits.
- Packaging broken down and the area tidied.
- Doors and drawers adjusted so they close evenly.
South Florida and beyond
Florida's humidity is hard on particleboard: pieces left boxed in a garage or lanai can swell before they are built, so keep flat-pack indoors until assembly. Outdoor furniture and playsets in coastal areas are worth fitting with stainless hardware where the kit allows.
Questions people ask
- How long does furniture assembly take?
- It depends on the piece: a nightstand is quick, a wardrobe with doors and drawers takes much longer. List every piece in your request (the free honey-do list builder on this site helps) and the handyman will tell you how long the whole job will take.
- Will you anchor furniture to the wall?
- Yes, and it is recommended for any tall dresser, bookcase or wardrobe. The handyman uses the anti-tip kit supplied, or a suitable one, fixed into a stud or masonry.
- Can you take furniture apart for a move?
- Yes. Disassembly and reassembly is common, and the handyman will bag and label the hardware so it goes back together.
