Interior painting: rooms, walls, trim and touch-ups

A room repaint is mostly preparation: patching, sanding, caulking and taping. Done well, the paint goes on in two clean coats and the lines stay sharp.

What people call about

  • A room, an accent wall or a ceiling that needs a fresh colour.
  • Scuffed walls and trim after a move, or before a sale or a new tenant.
  • Touch-ups after a drywall patch.
  • Doors, baseboards and window trim to refresh.
  • Ceiling stains from an old leak that has since been fixed.

Before the handyman arrives

  • Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Do not sand old paint before it is tested, and tell the handyman the age of the house.
  • A ceiling stain is a sign of a leak. Make sure the leak has been fixed first, or the stain comes back.
  • Buy all the paint for one room from the same batch, or ask for it to be boxed (mixed together), so the colour does not shift between cans.

What the handyman does

  • Furniture moved and covered, floors protected with drop cloths.
  • Holes and cracks patched, glossy surfaces sanded, gaps in the trim caulked.
  • Stains sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they do not bleed through.
  • Two coats on walls, cut in by hand at the ceiling and trim.
  • Tape pulled, the room cleaned up and the furniture put back.

South Florida and beyond

In humid climates like South Florida, bathrooms and kitchens do better with a mildew-resistant paint and a satin or semi-gloss finish that wipes clean. Air conditioning that runs all year helps paint cure; open windows in July do not.

Questions people ask

How much paint do I need for a room?
A gallon covers roughly 350 to 400 square feet per coat on smooth walls, and most rooms need two coats. The free paint calculator on this site works it out from your room size, doors and windows.
Do I need primer?
Over fresh drywall patches, stains, or a big change of colour, yes. Over clean, sound paint of a similar colour, a quality paint is often enough on its own. The handyman will say which your walls need.
Do you paint the outside of the house?
This service is interior painting. Small exterior touch-ups, doors and trim can be included; a full exterior repaint is a job for a painting contractor.
