Gutter cleaning and small gutter repairs
Gutters only work when they are clear. Leaves and seed pods block the downspouts, the water spills over the edge, and it ends up against the walls and foundation.

What people call about
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain.
- Leaves, palm debris and seed pods packed into the gutters.
- A blocked downspout, or water pooling where it comes out.
- A gutter pulling away from the fascia, or a joint that drips.
- Gutter guards to fit after the clean.
Before the handyman arrives
- Do not climb onto the roof to reach the gutters. Gutter work is done from a ladder, and roof work is not handyman work.
- Keep well clear of overhead power lines with ladders and tools.
- If the fascia board behind the gutter is soft or rotten, mention it. The gutter cannot be re-fixed to rotten wood.
What the handyman does
- Gutters cleared by hand from a ladder and the debris bagged.
- Downspouts flushed so water runs freely.
- Loose hangers re-fixed and leaking joints resealed.
- Downspout extensions or splash blocks to carry water away from the house.
- Anything wrong with the roof edge itself pointed out, because that is a roofer's job.
South Florida and beyond
Fewer South Florida homes have gutters than in the rest of the country, but where they exist, summer downpours and palm debris overload them quickly. In the Northeast and Midwest, autumn leaves are the main problem, and blocked gutters in winter can cause ice dams.
Questions people ask
- How often should gutters be cleaned?
- At least once a year, and twice where there are overhanging trees. In Florida, before the summer rainy season is a good time; elsewhere, after the leaves fall.
- Do you clean two-storey gutters?
- It depends on the ladder access and the site. Mention the height in your request and the handyman will say whether it can be done safely from a ladder.
- Can you install new gutters?
- Small repairs and short sections, yes. A full new seamless gutter system is usually a job for a gutter installer.
