TV mounting, level and secure
A wall-mounted TV should be level, at a comfortable height and fixed into something that will hold it for years: studs, block or brick, never drywall alone.

What people call about
- A new TV that needs to go on the wall instead of a stand.
- A TV over a fireplace or in a bedroom, where the height matters.
- A full-motion or tilting mount to swap in for a fixed one.
- Cables to hide in a cord cover or a low-voltage wall plate kit.
- An old mount to take down and the holes to patch.
Before the handyman arrives
- Do not hang a TV on drywall anchors alone. It may hold for a while; it will not hold for years.
- New outlets or moving power behind the TV is electrical work for a licensed electrician, not a handyman. Cables and low-voltage wiring are fine.
- Have the mount and its hardware on hand, or ask the handyman to bring one, and check the TV's mounting pattern (VESA) on the back.
What the handyman does
- The height worked out with you, based on where you sit, before any hole is drilled.
- Studs found on frame walls, or masonry anchors rated for the load on block and brick.
- The mount fitted level and the TV hung and checked for safety.
- Cables run in a surface raceway or a low-voltage pass-through plate.
- Soundbars, streaming boxes and shelves mounted alongside if you want them.
South Florida and beyond
Most South Florida homes have concrete block exterior walls and many interior walls furred out over block, so a TV on those walls needs masonry anchors rather than a stud. In frame houses, as in most of the country, the mount goes into the studs. The handyman checks which you have before drilling.

Questions people ask
- How high should my TV be mounted?
- For most living rooms, with the centre of the screen roughly at eye level when you are seated, which is usually around 40 to 45 inches from the floor. Over a fireplace it ends up higher, so a tilting mount helps. Try the free TV height calculator on this site.
- Can you hide the wires inside the wall?
- Low-voltage cables such as HDMI can run behind the wall through pass-through plates. Running a power cord inside a wall is not allowed by code, and adding an outlet is electrical work for a licensed electrician.
- Can a TV go on a concrete block wall?
- Yes, with masonry anchors rated for the weight of the TV and mount. It is the normal way to do it in most Florida homes.
