Shelves, mirrors, curtains and art, hung level

Anything hung on a wall is only as good as what it is fixed into. The right anchor for drywall, block or plaster, and a level, is most of the job.

What people call about

  • Floating shelves and bracket shelves.
  • Large mirrors, art and gallery walls.
  • Curtain rods, blinds and shades.
  • Closet shelving and organiser systems.
  • Coat hooks, towel bars, toilet-roll holders and grab bars.

Before the handyman arrives

  • Grab bars in bathrooms must go into studs or blocking, never drywall anchors. Mention it if a grab bar is on your list.
  • Do not drill above or below outlets and switches, where wires usually run.
  • Have the shelves, rods or blinds on hand, or agree what the handyman brings, before the visit.

What the handyman does

  • Positions measured and marked with you before drilling.
  • Studs, blocking or masonry found, or anchors rated for the load used where there is none.
  • Everything set level, and gallery walls spaced evenly.
  • Blinds and curtain rods fitted inside or outside the frame, as you prefer.
  • Holes from anything taken down patched.

South Florida and beyond

Concrete block walls in Florida homes take masonry anchors and a hammer drill, while frame walls elsewhere take screws into studs. Coastal homes do better with stainless or coated hardware on anything near a door or window, where salt air reaches.

Questions people ask

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
It depends on the bracket and what it is fixed into. A shelf fixed into studs or masonry holds far more than one on drywall anchors. The handyman will tell you what your wall and bracket can safely carry.
Can you hang a heavy mirror?
Yes, with fixings into studs or masonry or with anchors rated for the weight. Very large mirrors usually need two people to lift into place.
Can you install grab bars?
Yes, fixed into studs, blocking or masonry so they hold a person's full weight.
