How high should I mount my TV?

Enter the screen size, how far away you sit and your eye height. You get the centre height for the mount, the bottom and top edges, and whether the screen suits the distance.

Screen size for your seat

From 9 feet, a screen of about 66 to 90 inches fills a comfortable part of your view. On the small side for that distance: a bigger screen, or sitting closer, fills more of your view.

Turning this into a bracket height

  • Measure from the bottom edge of the TV to the centre of the mounting holes on its back (or to the mount's hanging point).
  • Add that to the bottom-edge height above (26 in): that is where the wall plate's centre goes.
  • Mark the screen's outline on the wall with painter's tape first and sit down to check it before drilling.
  • Check the TV's VESA pattern and weight against the mount's rating.

On the wall

  • Never hang a TV on drywall anchors alone: into studs on a frame wall, or masonry anchors rated for the load on concrete block or brick.
  • Power cords may not run inside a wall, and a new outlet behind the TV is a job for a licensed electrician. HDMI and other low-voltage cables can go through a pass-through plate.
  • Above a fireplace, check the TV maker's limits on heat and keep to them.

How this works

For comfortable viewing the centre of the screen sits at about the height of your eyes when you are seated, which on most sofas is 40 to 42 inches from the floor. A bedroom TV goes a little higher; over a fireplace it ends up higher still, and a tilting mount angles it back down.

The screen-size guide uses the two common viewing-angle recommendations: about 30 degrees of your field of view at the far end and about 40 degrees for a more cinema-like view. Screen width and height come from the diagonal for a standard 16:9 TV.

It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. It is a guide, not a quote or a professional assessment — products and walls differ, so follow the maker's instructions where they disagree, and the handyman confirms what the job needs when they see it.

Questions people ask

What is the right height for a TV on the wall?
With the centre of the screen at seated eye level, usually about 42 inches from the floor in a living room. That puts the bottom of a 55 to 65 inch TV roughly 24 to 28 inches up.
How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?
Roughly 7 to 10 feet is comfortable for most people with a 4K 65-inch screen. The calculator works it out for your size and distance.
Is mounting a TV above a fireplace a good idea?
It works, but the screen ends up higher than eye level, so a tilting or pull-down mount helps, and the TV maker's heat limits must be kept to.
Can a TV be mounted on a concrete block wall?
Yes, with masonry anchors rated for the TV and mount. It is the normal way in most Florida homes, where exterior walls are concrete block.
